THE BENEFITS OF COCONUT FIBER
Part of coconut fruit
Coconut is a monocot plant with non-concentric and woody vessels. Tree heads grow well on sandy plains such as beaches and tropical regions. The roots are fibrous, thick and woody and have bulbous roots. The leaf is a single leaf with pinnate reinforcement, the leaf is very deep with leaves so that it looks like a compound leaf.
Coconut tree flowers are compounded in a series protected by bractea. There are male and female flowers, married with one. Female flowers are located at the base of the bouquets, while male flowers are at a distance far from the base. While the part contained coir is the fruit.
Coconut fruit itself also has a fairly complex part. The fruit is large, 10 cm to 20 cm in diameter or even more. The color is yellow, green or brown. Coconut fruit is composed of mesocarp in the form of lignin fibers called coir. This part protects the hard endocarp (called shell) and is waterproof.
Endocarp protects seeds that are only protected by a membrane attached to the inside endocarp. Endospermum is a liquid or coconut water that contains a lot of enzymes, and the solid phase settles on the endocarp wall as the fruit ages.
What Is Coir Fiber & What’s In It?
Coir is the seed-hair fiber obtained from the outer shell, or husk, of the coconut. The coarse, stiff, reddish brown fiber is made up of smaller threads, each about 0.03 to 0.1 cm (0.01 to 0.04 inch) long and 12 to 24 microns (a micron is about 0.00004 inch) in diameter, composed of lignin, a woody plant substance, and cellulose.
The processed fibers, ranging from about 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12 inches) in length, are lightweight, brittle, strong, and elastic, with a tendency to curl. Hand processing often yields a superior fiber. They are resistant to abrasion and can be dyed. They are used to make brushes, are woven into matting, and are spun into yarns for marine cordage and fishnets. Coconut coir is often promoted as an environmentally friendlier alternative to peat moss in gardening. As a soil amendment, it helps retain moisture and aerate the soil. It is also used as a growing medium for hydroponic gardening.
